Clarke Eteng is a native Dayak from the island of Borneo who specializes in traditional tribal tattooing. The Dayak tribes of Borneo have a long, rich history of tattoo art that dates back millennia. The tradition has changed significantly due to western influence, and as populations over time have moved out of the jungle into cities. However, the new generation has advanced a strong revival of the art which Clarke is proud to be a part of. This seminar will include a brief history of Borneo tattooing and how it has changed, common motifs and their meanings, an explanation of traditional Handtap tools and process, and a live demonstration of the ancestral practice that Clarke still uses today.
